Depression is a disruptive mood disorder that can effect the way we think and feel. Low energy, hopelessness, low-self esteem, helplessness, worthlessness, loss of energy, fatigue, anxiety and sadness. When these conditions last more than a few days, it can set up a breeding ground or entry way for Depressive episodes to occur. Depression can happen to the best of us as well as to the least of us, meaning it can happen to anyone. Many of us go through Depressive Mood swings when losing a love one, spouse or friend, divorce or guilt ridden feelings about an event and many other life altering cycles or events. Depression symptoms can differ from one person to next; how severe the Depression gets or how often the symptoms occur and how long conditions last, can vary from person to person.
Women are more likely than men to have depressive cycles because of the many life cycle stages that they go through:
- The onset of puberty and hormonal changes
- Pre- Menstruation or pre-menstrual syndrome(PMS)
- Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
- During menstruation and changes to daily life functions
- During Pregnancy (Hormonal)
- After child birth(PPD)Postpartum Depression(Hormonal)
- Miscarriage (guilt and shame)
- Menopause (Hormonal changes)
Bishop Zeno B. Darden Jr, PH.D in Christian Counseling, Mental Health Advocate and President of Harvest In-Time Christian University say’s that “Depression can be passed down from one generation to the next through DNA. “He states, “there are times when counseling will work and others times when medication and counseling is encouraged to help manage the symptoms and to live a productive life because depression can be managed.”
If you are going through depression, seek professional help and counseling. Make an effort to open up and talk to someone. Remember there is always hope.
